Visit of the Lord and Lady Mayoress of Leeds

Jim and Andrea Mc Kenna, Lord and Lady Mayoress of Leeds, visited the Michael Davitt Museum, on Friday 17th September 2010.

The visit was organised by the Mayo Emigrant Liaison Committee, and was part of an organised tour of the west of Ireland, which incorporated places of local historical importance.

The group, a party of ten, was welcomed to the Museum by Mrs. Nancy Smyth, Curator, and members of the Michael Davitt Committee; After watching a DVD on the life story of Michael Davitt, they proceeded to acquaint themselves with the many Artefacts and memorabilia that are on show at the Museum.

They were most grateful for the opportunity to immerse themselves in this period of Irish History, and expressed their delight at the amount of historic material available for viewing in the beautiful restored pre penal church, which is now the Michael Davitt Museum. They completed their tour with a visit to the burial place of Michael Davitt, located beside the 13th century Dominican Friary adjacent to the Museum.

They pledged to make a return visit to the museum on their next trip to Ireland.
