Barber's Pole and Chair

Kiltimagh Railway Museum, County Mayo

The wooden pole is 30'' long, painted in red and white stripes and, when hung over the door of a premises, indicated a barber's shop.

The armchair is wooden, with a leather seat and a reclining back, to facilitate the tasks of shaving and washing/cutting hair.

These items, together with a 'cut throat' razor and leather strap, were the traditional stock in trade of barbers.

The chair and pole belonged to 'Sonny' Moran who operated a barber's shop from his home in Thomas Street for over sixty years, until he was over 90. His widow, Mrs. Moran, donated them to the Museum in 2001 after Sonny's death.
