Andirons or Bread Sticks

Enniscoe, Castlehill, Ballina, County Mayo

The early bread sticks were found in the hedgerows, just a stem of willow or other timber with three branches growing out of it. Later the blacksmith made the more usual iron ones.

They were used for baking oatmeal cakes in front of an open fire.
