Tobar Deirbhile / An Daghaigh Fál Mór

Eachléim Heritage Centre
Aughleam, Belmullet, County Mayo

Saint Deirbhle was on noble lineage, her father was Cormac Mac Daithí. She was a contemporary of Saint Columcille, founding her Convent here in the 6th Century. She devoted her life caring for the sick and the poor. Having her own eye sight restored at the well, it is alleged that water from the well has curative properties for eye complaints. A pilgrimage takes place here annually around 15th August. The station consists of walking around the well nine times (3 times on the knees and 6 times standing) reciting the Rosary (3 times).

The Well itself is approx 0.95m NS x 3.9m EW, 0.4m deep, surrounded by a modern stone closure 5.5m NW x 3.6m EW and fed by an underground spring. To the front ot the Well is an Altar or Eacht.

A place of pilgrimage, Mass is celebrated annually. It is reputed that water from the well has curative properties for eye complaints and other illnesses.

Reference to the Saint in the "Annals of Connaught" the Four Masters and Leacan Buí Leacan. Photograph belongs to Heritage Centre Collection.
